American Imperialism in the 19th century developed from the United States' desire to establish ourselves on an equal footing with European countries. Our concern that the United States would be left behind can be inferred from this political cartoon. Examine this primary source carefully. What does it help you understand about the forces that drove U.S. imperialistic policies at this time? Compare it to George Washington's Farewell Address.
"Study history, study history. In history lies all the secrets of statecraft."
"Crash Course" is a series of You Tube videos from John Green on American History. Excellent viewing for history buffs or even those who "don't know much about history" as the song goes!
There are 48 segments, starting from the beginning of U.S. history. Segment #35 is Imperialism, which coincides with the starting point of our 8th grade course of study. Be aware that some of the commentary can be considered controversial. But it all sparks excellent conversation.
